Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Desertification, the process by which fertile land becomes desert, is one of the most pressing environmental challenges in many parts of Northern Nigeria, including Arewa-Dandi Local Government Area (LGA) in Kebbi State. The increasing desertification in this region has been linked to a variety of geopolitical factors, including population pressure, local land use policies, and political decisions regarding resource management (Olawale & Garba, 2023).
Arewa-Dandi LGA, located in the northern part of Kebbi State, is particularly vulnerable to desertification due to its proximity to the Sahara Desert. Overgrazing, deforestation, and the mismanagement of land resources, compounded by political and governance challenges, have accelerated the process of desertification in this area. The study aims to examine the geopolitical implications of desertification, focusing on the role of local and state government policies, regional cooperation, and international interventions (Giwa & Sulaimon, 2024). Understanding how these geopolitical factors influence desertification will provide insights into how the region can address this issue more effectively.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Desertification in Arewa-Dandi LGA has severe consequences for agriculture, livelihoods, and the environment. The geopolitical factors that contribute to this process—such as local government policies, land ownership issues, and regional governance—are often overlooked. This study will evaluate the geopolitical implications of desertification in the region and propose measures to mitigate its effects.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it explores the complex relationship between desertification and geopolitical factors in Arewa-Dandi LGA. By examining the role of government policies, land management practices, and regional cooperation, the study will provide practical recommendations for addressing desertification in the region. The findings will be of value to local and state governments, environmental agencies, and other stakeholders working to combat desertification and improve sustainable land use practices.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Arewa-Dandi LGA in Kebbi State, specifically analyzing the geopolitical factors that influence desertification. The limitations include challenges in accessing data related to land use policies and environmental changes due to the complexity of the issue and potential political sensitivities.
